BDC SAILING SCHOOL
Monday/Wednesday and/or Tuesday/Thursday & Friday Fun Races
BDC campers who are entering 3rd – 10th grade, may enroll for our Sailing School. We offer individualized sailing instruction 2 and/or 4 days per week, for 3 hours each afternoon on our waterfront at Cliff Pond in Nickerson State Park. The pond is fully enclosed providing the ideal conditions for controlled and safe sailing instruction, at all levels of experience.
Coached by US Sailing Certified Instructors with decades of combined Yacht Club & collegiate competitive sailing experience, campers sail our fleet of Sunfish, 420’s and Day Sailors. Once participants complete a session (2 or 4 days) of Sailing School, they are invited to sail in BDC’s Friday Fun Races, applying the skills and excitement learned earlier in the week.
BDC’s six level Sailing School curriculum is taught in lock-step with the US Sailing Learn To Sail Small Boat Curriculum, the gold-standard in sailing education. We also take a fully-customized approach to this comprehensive curriculum, tailoring instruction to each participant’s individual skill set and goals. In our Sailing School, Level-1 Beginner sailors are taught in our largest boats, the Day Sailors, with an adult instructor in-boat. Our Level-2 Intermediate sailors are paired with an instructor, or another sailing school participant, in an appropriate boat for the wind and weather conditions. Level-3 Advanced sailors focus on solo sailing in Sunfish or 420’s depending on wind/weather and their own specific personal goals. When instructors are not in-boat, they are coaching at close distance in motorized launches.
Sailing School may be added to an existing BDC camp schedule as an EXTRA. Participants meet at the BDC Office at 12:50 and are bussed on our licensed and insured bus by a professional bus driver to and from our campus with other BDC campers and staff. Sailing School is offered rain or shine and the curriculum is adjusted accordingly.

STAND-UP PADDLEBOARDING (SUP) LESSONS
SUP (Stand Up Paddle-boarding) is a relatively new water sport whereby the paddler stands up on a board similar to a surf board or a windsurf board. The paddler and the board are propelled across the top of the water by the use of a long, single-bladed paddle. This activity facilitates excellent balance and core strength training. BDC offers SUP in small group instruction, and our own certified lifeguard accompanies each lesson. Participants always wear a life jacket throughout the activity. Sun shirts and ample sunscreen are encouraged. BDC offers SUP lessons on the ponds in Nickerson State Park which neighbor our campus as well as other local fresh water venues.
