Keeping the summer camp magic alive all year round
with community building and science in Cape Cod's rich wilderness!


WHO: The acronym H.O.W.L.S. stands for Holistic Outdoor Wilderness Leadership Skills. H.O.W.L.S. provides group programming which focuses on: team building; leadership skills development; and strengthening of group dynamics through embracing the outdoors and all that can be learned in a natural setting. Participants include: children enrolled in local schools; church youth groups; girl/boy scouts; skating/soccer/hockey and other teams; corporate leadership group training; adults wishing to come back to camp; and more!

WHAT : The H.O.W.L.S. Program utilizes out of school time to create value laden teaching and learning experienced in aquatic safety, environmental science, wilderness immersion, natural arts, and leadership education. Participants develop a command of scientific thinking, demonstrate creativity and build confidence in strong physical and emotional achievements.

WHERE: H.O.W.L.S. take place at 3570 Main Street, Brewster, MA where 4.5 acres is shared by the year round Family and Salt Box Schools. These wooded open spaces, playgrounds, two Yurts and a winterized Lodge are the perfect setting for the H.O.W.L.S. home base. A twelve element Low Ropes Course is also utilized in the Team Building portions of the H.O.W.L.S. curriculum. In addition, this innovative program takes full advantage of the neighboring 2000 acre Nickerson State Park as well as Cape Cod's beaches, ponds, and world famous natural settings. An easy jaunt over the Cape Cod bridge also allows the H.O.W.L.S. program to travel easily to Boston, Providence and other nearby locations which offer natural history and science museum learning opportunities.

HOW: Licensed by the Brewster Board of Health, the H.O.W.L.S. Program follows all of the camp regulations as stated in the Minimum Standards for Recreational Camps for Children (State Sanitary Code, Chapter IV) 105 CMR: Department of Public Health. Additionally, HOWLS uses Brewster Day Camp's Expectations for Camper Behavior as well as all of the Staff and Camper Policies as stated in the campers promotional materials.

WHY: The H.O.W.L.S. Program enablesBDC to "keep the magic of summer alive all year round." In addition, this program reaches a larger target audience by creating robust programming for older children, adults, and families.

WHEN: Programs are presently in place Monday-Friday meeting daily from 2:00-6:00pm for children in grades K-5. Programs for groups of older children, professional adults, and families are planned for evenings, weekends, and vacations.
