Overview

BDC's Camper Leader Program is a unique, part-time, summer opportunity for our oldest campers rising into 9th or 10th grade. Camper Leaders (CLs) are expected to be self reflective and to work as part of a team while identifying and taking responsibility for pursuing excellence in areas of interest. CLs at BDC learn that with freedom comes responsibility. All participants build skills and confidence in becoming a competent leader in an adult work force while gaining job and life skills. Applicants must apply for acceptance into the Camper Leader Program. Space in this program is limited and highly competitive. Once accepted, CLs, with the assistance of the CLP Mentor, design individual schedules which meet their personal goals and focus on the following three program goals:

  • Challenge oneself physically, mentally, and creatively in activity areas offered at Brewster Day Camp;
  • Learn effective communication, leadership, and team problem solving skills;
  • Acquire a working knowledge of appropriate child development teaching strategies when working with young children.

Pre-Requisites/Experience

Camper Leader applicants must be:

  • Rising High School Freshmen or Sophmores
  • Familiar with the routines and expectations of BDC through past camp experience and/or work with young children;
  • Able to demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively, set and achieve personal goals, demonstrate positive and effective leadership among peers and young children, be self reflective, and appropriately express emotions;
  • Able to document current abilities in activity areas through past experience, portfolios, certificates, and recommendation.

Individualized Responsibilities

CLs are an integral part of the camp community and may customize their own schedule depending on their interests and skills. Participants spend the day as a leader in a combination of one or more ways:

  1. Assist teachers/counselors in classrooms/tent groups with campers who are age 2-9 years old.
  2. Assist activity heads in areas of interest. Note: CL's skills are considered when making individual schedules, ie. only CLs with extensive sailing experience will be assigned to sailing, etc.
  3. Assist on BDC Trips, at Special Events, or during Wednesday Swim Meets.
  4. Take part in Tennis, Golf, Semi-private Swim, or Horseback Riding Lessons.

Because of the developmental lessons learned, all CLs spend some amount of time working with children toddler through pre-kindergarten age and must meet daily with their mentor. At the close of the CL experience they meet with the mentor individually and complete a Self Evaluation. A CL Assessment completed by the mentor is available upon request.

Schedule Options

The Camper Leader Program is intended to be a part-time program. CLs are cautioned against enrolling in this program for the entire summer. The full camp day is from 8:30-4:30 with a one hour grace period for early drop off beginning at 8:00AM and late pick up until 5:00PM. Please see EXTRAS brochure for information regarding Trips, Lessons, and Special Event Days. There are 4 ways to enroll as a CL at BDC:

  1. 5 full days (M-F) assisting with children ages 2-9 in the YCPs (Young Children's Programs) or in an activity area, or a combination of the two.
  2. 3 full days (MWF) assisting with children ages 2-9 in the YCPs (Young Children's Programs) or in an activity area, or a combination of the two.
  3. 2 full days (TTh) assisting with children ages 2-9 in the YCPs (Young Children's Programs) or in an activity area, or a combination of the two.
  4. Taking part in BDC Trips, Lessons, BDC Sailing School or assisting with Special Event Days.

Camper Leaders may combine some of these options to make an individualized schedule. For example: Enroll for MWF and for Sailing School TTh afternoons for a total of 4 weeks or 20 camp days.

Supervision

All participants are assigned to the CL Program Director/Mentor - a master's level BDC staff member accomplished in leadership training. Participants meet with the CL Mentor on the first morning of camp to determine personal goals and design individual schedules. During camp, CLs meet with the CL Mentor during lunch to discuss progress, challenges, and related topics. In their assigned areas, CLs are under the direct supervision of the Lead Teacher or Activity Head.

Application Process

The Camper Leader Program Application completed by both parent/guardian and Camper Leader must be accompanied by the non-refundable Processing Fee. Upon review of the submitted material, the applicant may be contacted for a telephone or in-person interview. All Camper Leader applicants, first year/new and returning CLs, must complete the entire Camper Leader Application including the Written Interview. CLP Written Interview

This portion of the application process MUST be completed by the applying CAMPER LEADER. The purpose of the interview is to:

  • Provide an opportunity for the camper to introduce him/herself to the program director;
  • Encourage the camper to review his/her strengths and weaknesses and consider how these attributes factor into the camper's performance in this program;
  • Allow the camper to outline personal goals for the summer and begin to define strategies for their accomplishment at BDC.

Acceptance

A limited number of CLs are accepted each summer. Applicants are accepted on the basis of submitted material, past experience, program availability, and in some instances, a personal interview. Tuition

Half of the tuition is due upon enrollment to hold the spot, and the remaining balance is due by May 1st. Participants pay reduced camp tuition as designated on the Camper Leader Program Application form. All applications accepted after May 1st must be accompanied by full tuition.

CLP Community Service Credit

Many High Schools are now requiring Community Service Credits for high school graduation. BDC is pleased to support this graduation requirement by providing written documentation regarding a CL's volunteer work with young children at BDC. If you are interested in CL Community Service Credit, please note this in your CLP application or inform the BDC Office, so that we may provide you with proper documentation at program's end.
